How to Measure for Your Easy Bath Vanity Top

Your Easy Bath top is cut straight from the dimensions you enter, with no site visit and no second measure. That's how we deliver in half the time at a fair price. It also means your tape measure has the final say, so set aside 15 minutes and follow these steps. Prefer to have a pro measure? Select Surfaces, our fabrication partner, is a full-service shop in the Chicago area and can field measure within about 100 miles of Chicago. Submit a custom order request for pricing with a measure.

Important: Orders go straight into production from your numbers. Once you approve and check out, all measurements are final. If anything is unclear, send us a photo and a question before you order.

What you'll need

  • A steel tape measure (not a cloth one)
  • A pencil and paper, or your phone's notes app
  • Your sink and faucet choice (or the spec sheets, if you're reusing your own)

1. Measure the cabinet length

Measure the cabinet box from left to right across the front, then again across the back. Use the larger number. If the vanity sits between two walls (an alcove), measure wall to wall at the back, middle and front, and use the smallest number minus ⅛". Walls are rarely perfectly square.

2. Add your overhang

Typical overhang: add 1½" to the front and 1" to each exposed side of your cabinet.

A side that touches a wall gets no overhang. For example, a freestanding 36" cabinet with both sides exposed takes a 38" top, and a 36" cabinet against one wall takes a 37" top.

3. Measure the depth (width)

Measure from the wall to the front of the cabinet doors or face frame, then add your front overhang (typically 1½"). Standard bathroom vanities are 21" deep, so the top is usually 22½". Enter this as Countertop Width in the configurator.

4. Find the sink center

Measure from the left end of the finished top to the center of your drain pipe or to the cabinet's centerline. This is your Dimension to Sink Center. For double-sink tops, measure the left sink from the left end and the right sink from the right end. Check that the sink bowl clears the cabinet sides and any center stile.

5. Choose your faucet holes

  • Single hole: one-handle faucets.
  • 3-hole, 4" spread: "centerset" faucets, with handles 4" apart center to center.
  • 3-hole, 8" spread: "widespread" faucets, with handles 8" apart.

Check your faucet's box or spec sheet. The spread is measured from the center of the left handle to the center of the right handle.

6. Decide which edges are finished

Every edge you can see or touch should be polished. Edges that butt against a wall can be unfinished, and edges that get a matching splash are backsplash. Backsplashes run 2.5" to 6" tall. A 4" splash is the classic choice.

7. Double-check and photograph

Measure everything twice. Write the numbers on a quick sketch, take a photo of the cabinet, and keep both with your order confirmation.
